Audero: “A dream save. Let’s celebrate getting three points”
As Domenico Criscito stepped forward to take a last-minute penalty for Genoa in the Derby della Lanterna, it looked as though Sampdoria’s hopes of securing three crucial points were in tatters. However, the Blucerchiati goalkeeper had other plans, making an incredible save to secure victory for his side. It was a magical end, beyond the fans’ wildest dreams.
Emil Audero spoke of his jubilation after the game. “I thought right away it was a penalty,” he admitted. “I was right, but in the end I’m happy. It’s a dream for me. It would be for any goalkeeper: to do that in the dying moments and right in front of the Gradinata Nord. The penalty determined the entire game and I hope even a season.”
After the match, the Sampdoria number one enjoyed rapturous applause from the fans in the Gradinata Sud, who were so grateful for his contribution. He reflected on what it meant for his side’s season overall. “This save came after a difficult year, which is still ongoing, but right now let’s celebrate getting three crucial points.
“Winning is vital for improving the atmosphere and helping the players. It seemed like we were struggling to get anything, but now… We showed great character today. It’s wonderful to win a derby like that. Now we need to stay focused on ourselves. We are in charge of our own destiny.”
